The Difference
between wool and nylon
Wool is a natural product (made by sheep!) whilst nylon
is man made. Decades ago wool carpets were far superior
to nylon, yet in the last 15 years nylon carpets have
improved out of sight.
These days nylon carpet is outperforming wool –
because there’s no fibre loss from nylon (the
fluffing you get on carpet). Infact most people now
have wool blend (ie. 80% wool 20% nylon).
You’ll also find that nylon carpets will have
guarantees on stains, plus it’s a lot more durable
than wool carpet. Depending on the quality of the nylon
carpet you buy, you can also receive an appearance retention
warranty.
So, in summary the differences are
- Wool sheds, nylon doesn’t
- Nylon has stain warranties (between 5 and 10 years
depending on the quality of the carpet), wool doesn’t
- Price – wool is dearer to buy
- Appearance retention warranty – on nylon.
Wool would typically last longer appearance wise
- Nylon - more affordable and bigger colour ranges
(you don’t see too many red sheep!)
How do you know what a carpet is worth?
Most carpet is priced is on the weight of the carpet
– (‘pile’ per square metre) the more
pile per square meter the dearer the carpet. You can
also tell by feeling the carpet, and knowing how many
‘tufts’ there are per square meter.
